2021 – Herman Swanepoel

Herman is currently the Chief Information and Innovation Officer at Bestmed Medical Scheme, the largest self-administered medical scheme in South Africa. a CIO who has demonstrated visionary leadership throughout his career. Starting as a CIO and now responsible for a large part of the organization, including Executive for Human Resources, and acting as Executive of the Manage Healthcare is a true example of a leader that is not a traditional CIO but a transformational CIO.
As a business technology leader (Chief Information and Innovation Officer) with over 20 years of industry experience, Herman fulfills roles to lead the march to the new Digital Economy. As an innovative business thinker,he mixes Business, Technology, and Leadership skills to assist organisationsin delivering strategic business processes, technology solutions, and digital business innovation. Hermans focus has always been to transform organisations through the strategic use of technology and innovation for sustainable business and growth.

Herman Swanepoel started his IT career at the Department of Health and obtained several IT certifications and formal IT qualifications alongside an MBA through the Edinburgh Business School (Scotland) a Global MBA in Digital Technology through Zigurat Global Institute of Technology (University of Barcelona) as well as successfully completed a Strategic Innovation program through Oxford University (UK). In 2000, Swanepoel joined UTi (Now DSV). In 2007, he joined Barloworld, both acquisitive businesses that required skills and expertise to integrate IT as part of the acquisitions, putting him on a steep learning curve. He then moved on to join Bestmed in 2017, where he has been instrumental in enabling the strategic technology rollout of the company.
