2021 – Khathu Sibanda

Khathu is a disciplined and results-driven IT Executive, offering more than two decades of IT experience and expertise in directing successful implementations of IT Strategies and technologies. She has a proven success track record in analysing critical business requirements, focusing on business alignment and technology integration for enhancing competitiveness and improving customer service offerings. She is a high-performing and solutions-driven Chief Information Officer (CIO) with more than 15 years of experience at an executive level. Khathu’s success is steered by her quick decision-making, strong ethics, a natural aptitude to lead multi-cultural teams and the ability to define new strategies that drive growth.
Khathu joined the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2018 to fulfil the role of CIO. Before joining UJ, she held various diverse positions in Executive Management in IT. She strives to be a strategic enabler for the University in delivering new tools and services that leverage technology and data, enable customers (staff and students) engagement and market the IT organisation across the University.

Khathu’s key expertise include ICT Governance, Risk and Compliance, Business Continuity and IT Disaster Recovery and planning (digital strategies); Her passion lies in the following:
• Empowering her direct reports to develop into high performing teams.
• Collaborating with colleagues and peers in the industry to devise new ways of solving problems.
• Driving innovation initiatives to optimise business and IT processes.
• Encouraging and guiding the younger generation to take on new challenges, showcase their strengths and improve weaknesses.

Khathu holds a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Limpopo, anMSc in Technology Management from the University of Pretoria and currently studying for PhD in Information Systems with the University of Johannesburg.
