IITPSA Western Cape Chapter

Special Interest Group in Software Testing (SIGIST)

The SIGIST is back in Cape Town after a long wait and numerous requests from the testing community. IITPSA and iLAB have worked together to finally put the SIGIST back on our calendars after the event has been absent for a few years. The SIGIST was created for and will continue to be for the IT community to discuss, query and learn more about all aspects within Software Testing, including the factors that impact and shape testing.

It is really fitting that at this first event, the re-launch of the SIGIST, the speaker will be one of the people who has been at the forefront of testing for the past 20 years.

The Speaker: Wayne Mallinson

Wayne Mallinson has 24 years of software testing experience – this after eight years of studying Geology and working as a Geologist.  His special interests in software testing and IT over the period have included acceptance testing, software Inspections, usability, automation testing, LEAN, systems thinking, services delivery and organisational design.

Topic: Lean Principles in IT, Software Testing, and Quality

Today there is much debate over the subject of the Agile Approach versus the Traditional Sequential methodology of software development.  This debate has greater clarity when seen from the perspective of LEAN principles.  LEAN is a term that was coined by Womack and Jones to describe the automobile manufacturing processes of the Toyota Production System of the early 1970s.

Agile will look like LEAN when it grows up as will Sequential models.  To deliver high quality software effectively and efficiently requires following the principles of LEAN.  These principles require a different management style from what is common today – and lots of hard work and learning – but the principles are essential for local and global competiveness in this decade.

LEAN principles improve management and worker relations and motivation, increase work efficiencies, and improve quality and speed, all of which lead to increased profits and therefore they are worth the considerable effort.
