An IITPSA Blockchain Event: Decentralized Finance (DEFI) Security Simplified

February 24, 2021 @ 16:30 - 17:30

Decentralised finance or DEFI has become an exciting buzzword in the crypto and blockchain community. DEFI is fundamentally a smartcontract running on the Ethereum Blockchain and gives investors powerful and flexible investment and lending options that are unique in the world of finance. The total value of crypto locked into DEFI investments is many billions of dollars and this makes it a target for hackers wanting to steal crypto. Investors desiring high returns in the DEFI world face the risk of the smartcontract they are investing in being the victim of a sophisticated hack. This coupled with the volatility of the crypto market makes investing in DEFI a risky proposition.

It is recommended that people individually audit the smartcontracts they want to use but this is very difficult for a person that does not have knowledge of programming or smartcontracts. In this event John Singh will discuss security best practices in the world of DEFI and provide non-technical people with some simple guidelines on what to look for when auditing smartcontracts that they have interest in.

Presenter John Singh is a Senior Systems Analyst at the Spar Group LTD and a non-executive director of the IITSPA. He has invested in cryptocurrency and spent much of his spare time learning about the technology behind the blockchain. John regularly attends Blockchain and Crypto events in Durban and Johannesburg. In 2019 he started an IITPSA Blockchain SIG in KZN because he is passionate about presenting Blockchain in a simple and understandable way so that individuals can make better decisions on how they wish to use the technology.
