An IITPSA KZN Chapter Event: Blockchain SIG: Bitcoin Cryptography

July 29, 2020 @ 18:00 - 19:00

Bitcoin uses public key cryptography to create a key pair that controls access to bitcoin. The key pair consists of a private key and a public key. The public key is used to receive funds and the private key is used to sign the transaction to spend the funds. Cryptography has a solid research and mathematical history and provides the foundation for bitcoin. Bitcoin is open and public and anyone can use and access it but yet it is still secure due to the use of cryptography. In this presentation John Singh will go into the details of how cryptography is used in bitcoin. He will cover the following topics

  1. Hashing
  2. Public and private keys
  3. Bitcoin addresses
  4. Elliptical curve cryptography and digital signatures
  5. New advancements using Schnorr signatures
