Breakfast @ SIGiST June 20th 2018

June 20, 2018 @ 07:30 - 12:00

Join us for an interesting two-part event

Abstract 1 – Technical Debt

The talk is based on the work of Ward Cunningham and Doc Norton. It looks at the consequence of poor software development or to the deployment of hardware, highlighted by lack of updating, bad maintenance, corrected versions, problems of scalability, and the unsystematic incorporation of new functionalities.

Speaker:

Martin Byker has many years’ experience in Software Quality Engineering and has worked on many projects and saved the bacon of many project managers. Currently he is a tubist, a brewer of beer, and Quality Coach with a strong leaning towards Agile, Lean, and getting stubborn organizations to do things better.

As a young boy he wanted to be a firefighter but his father told him that he took too long to get dressed in the mornings, and that firefighters needed to get dressed very quickly (which led to a failed experiment involving a pair of pants, 2 chairs, shoe laces, and a 5-year-old kid trying to jump into the pair of pants). So, instead of becoming a firefighter, he became a Software Engineer….and he has since been fighting fires for 19 years…

Abstract 2 – Artificial Intelligence & Software Testing: Hype or Hysteria?

Adopting Artificial Intelligence in testing is a must for organisations. Their survival in the medium term relies on this. But many organisations have a low maturity in managing the quality of their software applications. Faced with arbitrary test data and with many still embarking on the journey to shift left with test automation, very few have the faintest idea where to start.

What do we do with all the hype around Artificial Intelligence? Which of the myriad voices and doomsayers do we believe? How do we determine which of the vendors pitching their offerings can be trusted? What are the first steps to take to embark on a successful Artificial Intelligence journey?

Speaker:

Johan Steyn is a business development specialist who has been selling technology products and services in South Africa and in Europe over the last 20 years. During the last decade, his focus turned to the Software Quality Assurance and Testing market. He worked in senior roles for global consulting firms like SQS and Accenture and is currently working at Nedbank as Senior Manager: Enterprise Quality Assurance.
