Part One: The DevOps Tsunami – fact or fiction?

Abstract

A few weeks ago I published an article on LinkedIn, stating that “A wave of change is about to hit us. Not only are we not ready, most of are not even aware.” The article was about the changes that DevOps will force the world of Testing to undergo, and I argued that especially manual testers should up skill fast or get their CV’s ready.

The article had overwhelmingly positive reaction, so much so that a DevOps publication from the UK asked to republish it. But it also caused unease with friends and colleagues, and I received some scathing private messages.

So am I right in predicting a Tsunami? Or have I simply tried to be sensational to get exposure for my article?
–
My talk is to address this question. I will not be talking about the basics of DevOps or the technical aspects of it. But I want to address the business issues surrounding this new world, and how the testing community (testers, providers, trainers) need to adapt to stay ahead of the curve of change.

Part Two: My principals on testing …. And Life

This talk was borne from the question what does it take to win a National testing award?  On reflection I realised that in principal one does not particularly go looking for awards, however there has to be some intrinsic alignment with values and principals of what makes a rounded tester and beyond.
–
I will share a few anecdotes of my time in the industry and unpack what I believe is really important to me as a test practitioner.

Rob Kerrich-Walker has been in the IT industry for the best part of twenty years of which fifteen of which has been in formal testing. He has gone through the ranks of various testing roles, been involved in training, implemented test process improvement, run Test managed service and Quality Assurance and is currently focusing on implementing Agile practices.
