IITPSA InnovationSIG: Outcome Driven Innovation – 17 May 2018

May 17, 2018 @ 17:30 - 19:30

You are invited to an IITPSA InnovationSIG event
Topic: Outcome Driven Innovation (ODI)
If you knew the unmet needs of each segment of your market, what is the probability of success?
In our experience of using ODI, 86%.

Rather than brainstorming many potential solution ideas it is far better to know the needs first:
 1. Know the true context of the needs, which is neither the current market definition nor the product, but the over-all purpose for which customers choose to use a product to get a job done.

2. Capture the needs in a uniform way that everyone can agree with, and that is free from current features, solutions, and specifications. The best definition of a need for us is an outcome statement.

By investing the time to analyse the steps people take to get their jobs done, we can find all the needs in that job. By reducing the needs to a single format outcome statement, we can gather reliable statistical data from customers that consolidates all views of needs and segments in the market around different patterns of unmet needs. The process is called Outcome-Driven InnovationÆ and was pioneered by Tony Ulwick of Strategyn twenty-five years ago and has informed Clayton Christensenís views on disruptive innovation.
If you had a set of all the criteria your market would use to judge your innovation, finding that solution would become much easier. Itís like getting the exam paper before the test.  Outcome-Driven InnovationÆ does just this.

In the talk, Kimon will discuss:

  • Defining markets around the jobs that customers complete.
  • Creating outcome statements.
  • Quantifying the degree to which needs are over- or under-served.
  • Creating a statistically valid map of need opportunity.
  • Segmenting markets around needs.
  • Designing a winning market and product strategy.
