InnovationSIG – Thursday after work – 3D Printing, is it Hype or a Game Changer?

Abstract

Oliver Hay will present a brief history of 3D printing and its roots including its inventor, pioneers, and forward thinkers.

He will then discuss current applications in the real world: Automotive; 3D Printed circuit boards; Industrial; “The Open Source movement”; and the “Maker Revolution.”

He will take us through future applications and concepts in 3D Printing: 3D Printed houses, organs, and food.

Oliver Hay is a Director at Big Ideas 3D Printing, a rapid manufacturing company based in Alrode South, established in 2013.

The company has used 3D printing to create anything from jewellery in gold and silver to models of ultrasound scans of foetuses, ornaments, replacement parts for industrial machines, injection mould manufacture, prototyping products, and making production runs into the thousands.

Oliver works in an environment which has produced low and high volume runs of unique parts using a variety of 3D printing technologies and materials. Different materials used include ABS plastic, polycarbonate and nylon, stainless steel, titanium, rubber and many others.  The products are designed for use in various fields, from the design sector through to the industrial sector, from prototypes to end use parts.
