Teachers’ webinar: Unplugged coding, FIRST LEGO League, cybersecurity awareness and ChatGPT in education

The Eastern Cape Chapter of the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA) invites all primary and high school teachers to an afternoon of unplugged coding, FIRST LEGO League, cybersecurity awareness and ChatGPT in education. This is a free teachers’ webinar for all educators, parents and interested stakeholders. There are also Takealot vouchers to be won!
Craig Rosewarne – Cybersecurity Awareness
Craig Rosenware is the MD of Wolfpack Information Risk – a specialist firm established in 2011 that assists countries, companies & communities to defend against cyber threats. He founded Alert Africa in 2015 to provide pro bono awareness resources and assistance to victims of cybercrime or harassment.Craig has 20+ years management experience in the fields of cybersecurity, privacy & resilience. He has provided oversight to 600+ projects in this domain.
He is an author, instructor, keynote presenter & provides regular opinion pieces via TV, radio and print/online media.
Mpumezi Gungqisa – Unplugged Coding
Mpumezi Gungqisa is a passionate graduate from Nelson Mandela University, who holds a bachelor of science degree. He is currently making a significant impact as part of the Leva Foundation’s Tangible Africa Project, directed by Professor Jean Greyling. He fills the role as teacher trainer, facilitator and is responsible for outreach in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.
A main focus is introducing unplugged/offline coding to learners and educators as well as visually impaired individuals. This is achieved by using an innovative approach that bridges the digital divide which under-resourced learners face by providing valuable opportunities in developing coding skills.
Bronwen Jonson – FIRST LEGO League
Bronwen Jonson is the Head of ICT at Summerwood Primary School in Port Elizabeth. She has been teaching ICT to Grades 1 to 5 for the past 11 years. In 2023 Summerwood Primary joined the First Lego League Family. They currently have 2 teams taking part in the Challenge League with their Grade 3 learners taking part in the Explore League.
Mark Brand – ChatGPT in Education
Mark Brand is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Technologies at the Nelson Mandela University. His diverse interests and occupations have included years as a touring rock musician, choral director, IT trainer, fence salesman and sound engineer. Over 17 years as a Lecturer in Music Technology, he developed a special interest in the enigmatic interface between humans and technology. Mark holds postgraduate qualifications in Engineering (SU) and Computer Science (NMU), and a BMus from the erstwhile UPE. His research has focused on the applications of complex neural networks in computational ethnomusicology. His teaching is characterised by two things: an infectious energy; and a steady stream of technological innovations, all devised to expand and enhance the learning experience of his students. He tried to get ChatGPT to write this for him, but it all got a bit too cringe.
