At a ceremony in Cape Town, the Institute of IT Professionals recognised and
honoured the top Informatics learners in the 2016 Western Cape senior certificate exams.

Trophies and gifts went to the learners who had scored the highest marks in Information Technology (IT) and Computer Applications Technology (CAT) in the Western Cape.  The winner of the SCEG CAT Trophy was Alexander Spanellis of Overberg High School in Caledon. He received the trophy in the presence of his proud parents Dimitri and Desiree and his delegated teacher, Ms Vivienne Cleophas. Ms Cleophas has only been teaching for three years and she was Alexander’s CAT teacher for all that time. CAT is regarded by
some experts as the most useful subject in the curriculum. By teaching learners to use common applications like Word Processors, Spreadsheets and Databases prepares learners for both an academic career and for immediate employment.  Alexander is studying to be an accountant. To gain practical experience he has already started working for a firm of accountants in Riviersonderend.

The SCEG IT Trophy went to Christine Vivier of De Kuilen High School in Kuils River.  Parents Franzelle and Cornelius were beaming when she received her trophy from IITPSA’s Peter Waker. Christine is studying medicine at Stellenbosch University and has already started her work by visiting hospitals.  SCEG is an acronym for Schools Computer in Education Group – a body of teachers who promoted the use of computers in education in the early 1980s. In those days they offered training courses to teachers. The surplus funds from these courses were used to purchase the SCEG trophies for IT and CAT. Now, 35 years later, SCEG as an organisation has disappeared, but the Institute of IT Professionals is proud to continue awarding the trophies.
