One of things that makes me proud as the IITPSA President is when the media refers to Immediate Past President, Adrian Schofield, as an ICT stalwart.  The truth is that IITPSA is endowed with many stalwarts; these include Gail Sturgess, Moira de Roche, Mike Chiles, and many others.

On the 30th January 2014, I had the opportunity of attending the AGM of our Western Cape Chapter and presenting a Certificate of Recognition to one of our stalwarts, Peter Waker.  This was done to acknowledge the valuable contribution that Mr. Waker has made over many years with the successful running of the Computer Programming and Applications Olympiads and related competitions.  I want to take this opportunity to encourage the IITPSA members to learn from our stalwarts.

Towards the end of last year, I was saddened to hear that an ICT sector stalwart and a past recipient of the IT Personality of the Year Award, Dr. Alan Knott-Craig, suffered what the media called a minor stroke. It was Dr. Knott-Craig who convinced the then National Party government and the future ruling party, the African National Congress, to approve the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) as a technology that would be employed in the mobile telephony industry.  This decision implied that the cellphones in SA would, from the first day of inception, use digital technology instead of the old-fashioned analogue technology.  Thanks Dr. Knott-Craig; please recover well and speedily.
