SIGiST Event: The Business of Testing – A view of testing service in the South African Market – 19th August 2015

Abstract:

“Software testing is a means to an end.” As simple as this phrase may sound, my view is that many software testing practitioners often miss this point. Many in the testing community are well versed in the methodologies, approach and tools needed to execute a successful testing project. However in my experience there are not many testers that are able to articulate their understanding in non-technical/business terms. Many are comfortable to deal with fellow testers, but when interaction with business stakeholders is required the wheels often come off. A well-rounded testing practitioner is someone who is not only technically capable and experienced, but one who understands the larger business context in which they perform their craft.

I wish to address the above by talking through the following points:-

• How is the software testing world, and the role of testers, viewed by our IT peers and customers?
• How big is the testing market locally and what is the future for testers?
• How to become a well-rounded test professional – someone who understands the context in which they perform testing, who can explain their role and value-add in business terms to stakeholders, and who can display the needed business acumen to progress their careers.

About the Presenter(s)

Johan Steyn is a business development specialist who has been selling technology products and services locally and in Europe over the last twenty years. Over the last six years his focus turned to the local software testing market. He is currently the Software Testing Capability Lead for Accenture in South Africa.
