April 21, 2016 @ 17:00 - 19:30
IITPSA Members attending this event will earn CPD / LLL points
Abstract:
Virtual Reality is currently high on the agenda for being one of the most exciting and emerging technologies for 2016. My presentation will focus on how virtual reality could assist the connected researcher with visualisation techniques, collaborative virtual workspaces or even delivering educational content. The presentation will be interactive and I will preview examples of using the Oculus Rift DK2 and the Leap Motion gesture controller to showcase what the benefits are in the educational and research sector.
About The Speaker:
Timothy Carr, eResearch Technical Specialist, University of Cape Town, 16 years of ICT experience.
Timothy Carr has been assisting UCT researchers with offloading their data intensive / CPU intensive tasks onto High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure. His contribution on a national level consists of projects via the South African National Grid (SAGRID) programme to onboard researchers and assist with continuous deployment support. Internationally, he spent 3 months working for the Consortium GARR at the INFN, Italy, porting scientific applications onto Grid connected HPC systems using the European Grid Initiative middleware. At present, Timothy develops SAAS applications on the African Research Cloud (ARC) to enable UCT researchers to spin up development instances of applications.
