How women can thrive in the IT work place – 30 August 2018 – A Women in IT (W Cape) Event

August 30, 2018 @ 17:00 - 18:30

Overview (Panel Discussion)

IITPSA Women in IT event “How women can thrive in the IT Workplace”

As one of its strategic goals, IITPSA strives to encourage and promote women in the IT Workplace. IITPSA want to encourage girls to enter the workplace and help build work environments that make women stay. To honour Women’s month in August, IITPSA are holding a special event to explore the issues facing women.

A panel of women who are successful in the IT workplace will share with you:

  • How to maintain work-life balance, and strategies for overcoming technology-driven “always on”.
  • The opportunity to work from home, and how to make this work.
  • Why family commitments disadvantage women in the workplace, and approaches to overcome the disadvantage.
  • What does a women-friendly workplace look like?
  • Self-confidence and assertiveness as tools to help women win.

Panel of Speakers

Karen Nadasen – PayU

Madelein Gray – Microsoft

Tina Lee Singh – TLS

Moira de Roche – Panel Moderator

Karen Nadasen is regularly described as one of South Africa’s most inspiring women in tech, nominated for IT Personality of the Year 2017, and listed among 100 Most Influential Young South Africans 2017.

Despite SA’s negative economic and political factors and PayU SA itself consistency losing market share, under Karen’s leadership PayU has grown its total Ecommerce Processing Volume by 225%. Revenue has gone up 136% whilst costs have reduced significantly during her tenure. All this whilst balancing personal life – Karen started her tenure as CEO having just come back from maternity leave after 4 months.

Outside PayU, Karen’s industry experience, mostly abroad, ranges from FTSE 100 companies, large multi-nationals, to small scale start up’s. Industry sectors include Technology, Petroleum, Retail, Medical and Financial Services. Following a computer science degree at the university of Rhodes, Karen’s career started off as a Java developer in a small development house in Cape Town many years ago. Continued studies at UCT in Information Systems and Object-Oriented Programming and Design led her to assist Shoprite, as a business analyst, with their move to .Net, before being chosen by Microsoft to work on global projects abroad. Developing a reputation for taking on complex projects requiring rigor and tenacity to deliver, Karen was asked to join the IT division within BP’s Industrial Lubricants and Services on business transformation projects. Following a successful tenure at BP, both in Industrial Lubricants & Services, and Global Communications Karen decided it was time to move back to beautiful Cape Town where she started at PayU.

Madelein Gray is an award winning Microsoft leader recognised for her dedication and action orientation with a drive for results that consistently sees her delivering, and often exceeding, her and her team’s commitments. She is the Corporate Territory Channel Manager for the Coastal Region, based in Cape Town and continuously drives the partner eco-system and partner2partner build aptitudes with digital transformation IP Solutions and cloud deployment and consumption competencies.

Tina Lee Singh’s life meets at what some would argue is the unlikely intersection of IT and karate. In formal terms, Tina has a Bachelor of Business Administration (cum laude) and a MBA.  When not angsting over IT Management as Deputy Director ICT support services, Tina Lee is an internationally recognised SKISA Karateka. A 4th degree black belt, she has participated in 6 SKIF Karate World Cups and has captain of SKISA’s Women’s team.  But Tina has not limited her fighting skills to competition and the accumulation of belts. She has translated this skill into everyday usage by founding TLS which specialises in self-defence strategies and women empowerment.

As you will gather Tina Lee Singh is a woman programmed for change.

“The best protection a woman needs is Courage” – TLS
