What is it and why should you know about it?

Open licensing is becoming increasingly popular in many fields as a tool to openly share, collaboratively improve and generally facilitate open access to copyrighted creative material such as books, music, art and also computer software. As a result, questions concerning open licensing in general and the relationship between copyright protection and open licensing are now often raised by various stakeholders.

This presentation will, among other things, address many of the questions typically raised by covering the basics of copyright protection and then explain to some detail:

• what open licensing is;
• how open licenses fit within the conventional copyright system;
• how openly licensed works can be found and used; and
• how to select and apply the appropriate open license to your own copyright protected works.

Emphasis will be on Creative Commons licenses as the world’s most widely used set of open licenses for copyright protected works. The presentation will also briefly describe the relationship between CC an software and make mention of other forms of open licenses such as GNU/GPL licenses.”
