2023 – Nicoli Koorbanally (CEO – mLab)

Nicoli Koorbanally is a technology commercialisation expert with over two decades of experience in research, development, and innovation in South Africa (SA). Registered as a Technology Transfer Professional, she is dedicated to translating intellectual assets into commercial value and impact.

Her career began as a Research Chemist at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), where she immersed herself in the world of science. Her passion for technology innovation soon led her to pivotal roles as the Group Manager: CSIR Licensing and Ventures Office, at the National Research Foundation, and working with entrepreneurs at the Softstart Business Incubator.

Nicoli was instrumental in spearheading transformative projects such as the SA-Finland Knowledge Partnership on ICT, establishment of the World Bank-funded Southern African Mobile Applications Lab (mLab), and has lent her expertise to Boards and Committees, including WITS Commercial Enterprise, start-up CapeBio Technologies, and as a founding member of the South African Innovation Network. Her commitment to advancing SA’s technological prowess was demonstrated through her involvement with the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition’s Support Programme for Industrial Innovation.

She is currently CEO of mLab, leading a talented team focused on empowering SA’s youth and start-ups to navigate opportunities in the digital economy. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science from University of KwaZulu-Natal and an MBA from University of Pretoria.

Nicoli’s journey is defined by her dedication to fostering innovation, empowering the next generation of tech-savvy entrepreneurs, all driven by her passion for building a more equitable and prosperous South Africa.
